"Public Relations" can refer to a wide variety of activities that are focused on promoting our hobby, NAR and local sections. (Note that we segregate Outreach Ideas to its page for those activities where we actually involve the public in flying rockets.)

Teacher Fairs

The Big Brothers, Big Sisters connection came about when I went to a local teacher's fair in the fall about a year and a half ago. This was an event held by the school district where a large variety of organizations that might be resources for teachers had exhibitions. I set up a table with rockets on it and handed out fliers to teachers. One of the other groups with a display was the Big Brothers orgaanization. They thought our group might be something their participants would be interested in and I gave the representative my card. A while later we were contacted about holding a build and fly for them the following spring. It was very successful so they asked us to do it again this year. (Jonathan Sivier)

Newspaper Summer Fun Guide

The local paper publishes a special section listing events and activities for the whole summer. It came out this past weekend and we had all of our summer launches listed. We've already had people attend events and call for more information as a result so we feel this is an excellent way to get the word out about our club. (Jonathan Sivier)

NASA Education Events

NASA runs a pretty extensive educational program. Even if there isn't a NASA facility nearby, they may be active promoting space (and NASA) in your area. LUNAR often organizes an exhibit table at NASA Education events. (Craig Saunders)

Career Days

LUNAR members have organized exhibit tables at their places of work. Most recently, "Engineering Day" at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and "Young Minds At Work" at Lockheed Martin. (Craig Saunders)

Section Newsletter

Section newsletters are not just to inform section members. They are also a very effective means of conveying what your section is all about. Check out this newsletter discussion for some reasons why. (Craig Saunders)

Section Brochure

Our club has published a brochure that we ask local hobby shops to display. We also have them available at our club launches and other public activities. (Carl Krueger Jr)

Section Poster

We also have a club poster that we update anually with our monthly launch dates. (Carl Krueger Jr)

Radio Control Model Aircraft Airshows

R/C model aircraft is a related hobby and there is some cross-over between the two. But at the very least, most local R/C groups have one or two airshows each year. It's an opportunity for local NAR sections to do a demo launch and get the word out about our hobby.

LUNAR participates in at least one airshow each year. We setup an exhibit table and launch a rack of 6-8 rockets.(Craig Saunders)

Community Group Presentations

Local community groups, including libraries and service societies such Kiwanis, often bring in speakers to make presentations to their members. It's entertainment and education for the members and an opportunity for us to reach out to the public.

Often, we'll bring a video so that they can see what it's all about and several static models so that the audience can see what it's all about. (Craig Saunders)
